As a wealth of talent shows dominate our channels such as The Voice over on BBC1 and Britain’s got talent over on ITV, Channel 4 brings us two new shows next week, which offer a something a little different.

The first is a live version of Embarrassing Bodies, and the second, which will also be shown on Channel 4 is Secret Eaters. Here is a quick guide to both shows, detailing what you can expect when tuning in next week.

On Tuesday 15th May we see a brand new series return to our TV screens. Over on Channel 4 at 8:00pm we see the first of an eight part series of Embarrassing Bodies return. The show has been a hit for several years, seeing both men and women of all ages reveal some of the embarrassing health problems to the shows resident doctors Dr Dawn Harper and Christian Jessen.

This new series will be names Embarrassing Bodies: Live from the Clinic, which as the name suggests, will be live. The twist in this show, compared to the conventional version that has been running for several series, will allow you the viewers at home, to make an online appointment to reveal your issues and problems. The medical duo will select a few to deal with life on air direct from the studio.

As well as dealing with live questions from viewers, the new series will also provide viewers with several pieces of health advice and information. For example, the first episode will feature a handy demonstration, showing women how they can examine their own breasts at home for any issues, as well as information on why flatulence occurs and how it can be remedied.

Channel 4 is also welcoming a brand new series next week for viewers interested in health and nutrition. The new six part series is names Secret Eaters and will air over on Channel 4 on Wednesday 16th May at 8:00pm.

The new show will be hosted by experienced presenter Anna Richardson, who during each episode will be watching and following a family with weight problems undergo 24 hour surveillance. With their every move being watched and examined the footage will reveal exactly what is wrong with their eating habits as we get too see exactly when and what they eat and snack on during a 2 hour period. The first episode will see siblings Jill Hamill and Stuart Raphel become the first family to take part in this show. We will see the duos eating habits exposed as cameras are placed not only in their home and cars, but their shopping trolleys and fridges. If the duo thinks they can outsmart the Secret Eaters team they will be shocked, as there will also be two private investigators following their every move.

The aim of the show, is not only to highlight the bad food and drinks that each participating family over indulge in, but to help each family make a great change in their life. Therefore you will also be able to see each participating family undergo advice about their daily diet and exercise regime, in order for them to make a positive change.

The story of King Edward VIII is one that not only sticks in your memory but is the most unique ever to be heard in any monarchy around the world. Edward VIII was the first and probably the last King to be forced to abdicate the throne after the Archbishop Cosmon Gordon Lang believed that he was mocking the monarchy as he wanted to marry a twice-divorcee Wallis Simpson, who was also an American.

The TV show starts on Wednesday 9th May on Channel 4 and tells the whole story about how the Archbishop plotted to bring religion back to the UK, as Edward VIII was a staunch atheist, and rid the country of Edward’s uncouth ways. While the plot was looking like it would fail Lang decided to take even more drastic measures and employ the Prime Minister (Stanley Baldwin) after much pressure to join in the parade. Despite Edward VIII wanting to modernise the country his playboy attitude and shocking admission of wanting to marry Wallis led to his downfall and he was outed from the Royal Family, although didn’t give up the money so easily. That meant that the stuttering King George VI would arrive at the throne before Queen Elizabeth II who is still there some 60 years later and celebrates her Diamond Jubilee in June.

Channel 4 also sees a remarkable story of Katie Piper, a beautiful young lady who was attacked with acid and lost her sight and face. After 109 operations she looks almost back to her normal self except from her left eye and her 110th operation sees fit to change that. After 3.5 years of refusing to accept the fate of her left eye never working again, she took on the challenge to include stem cells to help rebuild her eye in a ground-breaking operation.

Stem cells are used in many countries to rebuild people’s lives yet many countries in the West are still researching the fact. However, with disabled people being made to walk again and repairing injured people so many times over in Thailand, China and Japan, it seems that the West is far behind in terms of medicine. The programme takes the journey into Katie’s life and explains how stem cells are used to help living people today, despite the ethical implications of using human embryos to generate the cells. This opicial surgery is set to be one of the first that the West has seen and with coverage like this on Channel 4 (Wednesday 9th May at 10.35pm) we could well be seeing the next generation of medical TV shows.

She refused to take no for an answer and tracked the doctor down who was willing to take the surgery on and put herself forward. After so many operations and a whole host of hurt, pain and suffering her face is remarkably different to when it was damaged from the acid attack. Her left eye is the only remaining part that is still injured, being completely blind in it, but after this futuristic surgery she hopes to be able to see again and bring much-needed exposure to stem cell surgeries so that others around the world can benefit from it. Watch as she goes through the pioneering surgery to rebuild her left eye and regain her sight again.

Over the coming weeks there will be plenty of new series, both brand new and returning for you to enjoy. Here we take a look at three new shows coming soon from Channel 4.

If you are in the market for a new home, and want to grab some hot tips on how to save money on buying a new home we have just the thing for you. On Monday 30th April, over on Channel 4 a brand new series named How to Haggle for a House will begin. The first episodes will air at 11:00am, and the series will run for five episodes in total. The series will feature George Harrison Brown, who is not only going to be the host of this new series, but is also a well known financial expert.

Throughout the series George will use his excellent negotiation skills to try and obtain the very best possible deal for potential home buyers, as he meets with the vendors face to face, rather than through an agent. This method will hopefully result in George securing a money saving deal on a property for his client. There will of course be a twist, just to keep things really interesting for you the viewers, as George will not be revealing how his negotiations went exactly until the potential buyers have viewed the property. Not only will this show provide you with some daytime entertainment, but if you are looking to buy a property you will hopefully pick up some top tips on negation, and who knows maybe even manage to save some money on the next home you buy!

If you are interested in the UK’s wildlife population, make sure you switch on over to Channel 4 on Monday 30th April. A new show named Foxes Live: Wild in the City will be airing its first episode at 8:00pm, and will run for a total of 4 episodes over the following weeks.

The new show will be hosted by duo Anita Rani and Mark Evans, who will be taking an in depth look at the lives of the UK’s fox population. The pair will be using modern tracking technology and state of the art equipment, to follow these intriguing creatures, and capturing armature footage of their whereabouts and daily goings.

You will also see the pair meet with several experts, as they ask many questions that the public often has, including those from fans of wild foxes, to those who have concerns over their locations and possible threat to the public. The show will be very interesting providing some in depth insights into foxes and how they live, as well as provide an up to date estimate on exactly how many foxes are living among those in urban areas of the UK.

The third new show that Channel 4 will be airing soon is the return of 8 out of 10 Cats Uncut. The show will air over on Channel 4 at 11:00pm on Monday 30th April, and will be entering its 13th season. The show will be presented by comedian Jimmy Carr and will see team captains Sean Lock and Jon Richardson answer some tough and interesting questions from UK polls. This new series will be an extended version of those previous, so we will hopefully see some new and improved elements to this popular series.

Celebrating not only the return of a brand new series, but its 40th season, you can expect this show in particular to be brilliant. The series will carry on for 6 episodes in total over the following weeks, however episode 1 will see a vast range of popular and talented acts perform for you. The first act you can expect to see on this show is Paul Weller, who had his 11th album named Sonik Kicks jump straight into UK music charts at number one only last month.

During the first episode you will also see other acts performing for your pleasure, including a superb vocalist from Brazil named Ceu; and Willis Earl Beal, who is a singer from Chicago. UK performers Beth Jeans Houghton, and The Hooves of Destiny from Newcastle will also be performing some of their brand new tracks from their latest album names Your Truly.

In addition to some new up-coming and well known musicians performing on Jools’ show, you will also see him sit down and chat with a familiar celebrity.
Later on in the week, on Thursday 19th April we have yet another new series for UK TV fans to tune into. Grandma’s House enters its second series on this day over on BBC2 at 10:00pm. This comedy TV show features some familiar cast members such as Simon Amstell, who you may recall presenting weekend morning shows such as T4 over on Channel 4, as well as many others. Simon has created some pretty good reviews about his performance, as many were not expecting the presenter to be able to act as well as he has. However, as the show has been commissioned for a second series, and fans seems to be happy – it seems that those who had this worry prior to seeing the show, needn’t fret too much.

Other cast members who we can expect to see on a regular basis include Samantha Spiro, Linda Basset and Rebecca Front. This new series will see six episodes being shown over the following weeks. The first however, starts approximately 6 months after Simons beloved Grandfather passed away. Simon has now decided to move in with his Grandma on a full time basis, offering her and himself some support following several unfortunate events. However, with this new move, and the loss of his Grandfather Simon starts to feel that his future and life are looking pretty grim.

Not only has Simon lost a relative, but he has also had to give up his adored flat in London, as well as losing his TV presenting career. With his career dwindling fast, Simon is forced to take drastic action and look for, and accept, poor TV jobs. Also during this first episode of season two, you will see Simon’s Grandma attempt to reunite Liz and Tanya after the pair had disagreement in the midst of their Dad’s funeral.

Fans of UK television, in particular comedy will be no stranger to Ricky Gervais. The comedian who first started out on radio first shot to nationwide fame with his hit TV series The Office. Next we saw Gervais receive subsequent success when he created, and starred in yet another hit show, Extras. Not only the nation, but the world paid attention to the comedian, yearning for more shows and humour. Ricky saw the UK’s beloved Office commission by HBO for US viewers to enjoy, where Steve Carrel took on the managers role in which Gervais played in the UK version.

With viewers wanting more, we saw Gervais land Hollywood movie roles. It seems the world, and the notoriously tough to crack US couldn’t get enough of Ricky, even when he caused much outrage at not one – but three Golden Globe award gigs. Those of you in the UK who have followed Ricky’s career will ‘get’ his humor, however this is something that the US Hollywood elite took, well shall we just say, some getting used to, and now the majority see what a comedy genius Ricky is.

The hilariously clever side of Ricky did not diminish, nor did his talent for creating tummy achingly funny shows, as he graced the world with yet another hit series ‘Idiot Abroad’. This show was the first in which we saw Ricky and partner in crime Stephen Merchants close friend, and can ex-colleague Karl Pilkington make his debut. The show was a massive hit, seeing several series commissioned for Sky.

The world fell for Karl, adoring his innocence, and blunt opinions. Karl travelled the world, under instruction and guidance from Ricky and Stephen, seeing the charming idiot face fears, meet new people and try to understand the world’s cultural differences.

Just as you thought that could Ricky couldn’t possibly produce another show to live up to the success of those previous such as The Office and Idiot Abroad, news is released of a brand new series named Derek. Not only is there one piece of good news, but two!

The first is you needn’t wait long for this show to air, as the release date for Derek is the 12th April 2012. That’s right this new show starts this month! To some surprise, this new show will not be aired by the BBC like those before, but instead it will be shown on Channel 4, which is known for being a little more daring and willing to push comedy to its limits than the BBC.

Now for the second piece of good news, the cast will of course feature Ricky who plays the lead character Derek, a care home worker who loves to collect autographs, but will also see none other than Karl Pilkington make his acting debut!

After watching the trailer, the simple characters are brilliant, and are sure to bring with them plenty of cringy, and hilarious moments that make each series Gervais creates so fantastic. You will also notice that Karl plays his character very well also, however it really does not seem as if he is acting, simply being himself in a wig. Now this may sound strange, but it actually really works, somehow making the whole show even more humorous.

Only time will tell if this is going to be as big as those shows previous, however going by Ricky’s track record it would be hard to imagine it being a disappointment.

This week in the UK it’s all about talent shows. The BBC and ITV are going head to head this weekend with a brand new series each showcasing, what they will hope some of the best talent acts we have yet seen on British television.

Both shows will air on Saturday 24th March, however will air at slightly different types. The first is named The Voice and will be shown on BBC1 at the family friendly time of 7:00pm. The Voice is a brand new type of talent show that we have not yet had the pleasure, or so we hope, to yet experience. This show has been made in the US, where it has had a warm welcome, thus the UK version has a good range of celebrity judges. The four judges who will attempt to find the UK’s next big thing include singing legend Tom Jones, Danny O’Donoghue, and pop sensations Jessie J and Will I Am.

If you are expecting the usual singing contest, then you may be disappointed, as the BBC seems to be well aware that they need to be different and give viewers something different, and that is exactly what they have done. Yes, you will still see many hopefuls compete, but the judges will not. That’s right they will listen to each contestant, but they will not be able to see them, therefore there are no other contributing factors to how they are selected – they are simply judged on their voice.

Will it work? Who knows, but one thing that must be said is it certainly is very different and maybe that is just what’s needed for the UK’s talent show sector.

If your desire for talent, both good and bad has not yet been satisfied then tonight is your lucky night. Switch on over to ITV at 8pm and you can tune into a brand new series of Britain’s Got Talent. The show will be entering its 6th season and will be hosted by the nation’s favorites, Geordies Ant and Dec. The show will pretty much offer us the same format as it has done for seasons previous, however there are a couple of new faces on the judging panel to keep things fresh and moving forwards. Simon Cowell will of course be one of the judges whose seat is kept on the panel, as is new mum Amanda Holden. The new judges you will see on Saturday night include Alesha Dixon, who is a sassy singer and also a previous contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. Also new to the panel, and sure to bring along with him a good few laughs is David Walliams, who shot to fame in the comedy sketch show Little Britain.

This season, like those previous, is sure to bring with it a lot of great talent from singers, dancers to magicians, and of course a lot of bad acts. The new judges will hopefully bring with them some excellent critique some of which we will agree with, but maybe some we won’t.

If you love talent shows, or just want to watch something new then Saturday night is perfect. The question that will be on everyone’s mind afterwards though, is which show was better? The trusty Britain’s Got Talent on ITV, or the new kid on the block over on BBC, The Voice?

At long last, the eighth season of The Apprentice is hitting our screens again, where 15 hopefuls vie for a position as an employee of Lord Alan Sugar. As ever, the programme sees candidates from all walks of life, bustling for attention and itching to show off their prowess in business. The programme starts on the 21st March, on BBC1, at 9pm and is set to draw millions of viewers once again. Lord Sugar will be on-hand to dish out the compliments and the insults to the plucky entrepreneurs as he fires them one-by-one until the final three.

Episode 1 sees the team head to the Emerald Isle and try their hand at battling against millionaire Bill Cullen. With the team’s ruthlessness, intelligence and stamina, they must draw upon all of the skills in business and try and complete tasks that Sugar sets, to see which of them can handle everything that is thrown at them. The candidates will be split into two groups and pit a team effort in the task and the winning side will see a treat at the end of it all, while on the losing team will be brought back into the boardroom.

As usual, the team leader from the losing team will bring two of the worst-performing members back into the boardroom to face Lord Sugar and one of them will be fired. It’s a cut-throat way of interviewing the candidates, but as we’ve seen for many years in the past it’s one of the best ways to weed out the doers from the talkers.

Four Rooms is entering its second season on UK TV and begins on the 21st March at 8pm on Channel 4. If you haven’t already seen it, Anita Rani the presenter, brings the public in to try and sell their art, collectibles and antiques in an Antiques Roadshow meets Dragon’s Den type of show. It’s certainly interesting with the amount of unique artefacts and items that come out of the woodwork, such as JK Rowling’s chair, Francis Bacon’s paintbrushes, Marlon Brando’s artworks, a cigar once owned by Winston Churchill and an original 1960s Dalek.

The public pit their wares to the art dealers and try and gamble their possessions for top money, while the ‘Dragons’ will try and get the best price possible. This programme will appeal to Antiques Roadshow viewers but has the cut-throat attitude as you’ll see in the Apprentice, so it is bound to draw at lot of viewers.

There are 8 episodes set for the second season of Four Rooms, which will see a myriad of incredible collectibles in later episodes such as Victorian death masks, a one-million year old fossil, 1,000 Matchbox cars, a bottle of wine owned by George Best and many more. Putting values on these stunning pieces of history and artwork is very difficult for the panel but one thing is for sure, either the public will receive a fantastic surprise and go home with a wad of cash, or they will be deeply disappointed as the art dealers use their negotiation skills to drive the prices down.

Who will crack first, the dealer or the art owner? Who will get a bargain and who will get short-changed? It’s going to be a rocky ride for both sides and if you love to see historical items’ value then you’ll love Four Rooms.
