iPlayer Abroad on the iPhone
I have been using this to watch iPlayer abroad on my iPhone for quite some time now but only recently have I been given permission to let you all know how to do this!
Firstly as always you are going to need an account with Identity Cloaker, no they don't have an official iPhone version (yet) but you can still use their service!
Once you are up and running with Identity Cloaker on your PC (or Mac, yes Mac version is almost ready!) just lookup the IP address of one of the UK servers (those are the sets of numbers that go XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)
Now this only works with WiFi connections at the moment, a limitation put in by the guys at Apple, so if you don't have WiFi at home go to McDonalds and use their free WiFi!
One you phone go to 'Settings' then 'WiFi' and click on the blue arrow to the right of the WiFi point you are using. This will bring up all the advanced details of this connection, you want to scroll to the bottom where it says 'HTTP proxy' and change this to 'Manual'
You now have some new settings, which you should fill in as follows:
- Server: use the IP address you took from the program already
- Port: 4040
- Authentication: Change to 'On'
- Username: Your Identity Cloaker username, same as you would use when using Identity Cloaker on your PC
- Password: Your Identity Cloaker password, same as you would use when using Identity Cloaker on your PC
Now just click back to the WiFi section and press the Home button. Now you can open Safari and visit the BBC iPlayer Website and watch iPlayer on your iPhone anywhere in the world!
If you have problems try a different IP address, just be sure to pick one from the UK!
Windows 7 & iPlayer Abroad
So Windows 7 is upon us and I just thought you should know that there are no problems using Windows 7 and Identity Cloaker to watch BBC iPlayer Outside the UK, or of coruse any of the other UK or US TV channels abroad. If you are running the 32-bit version then everything will work 100% as normal. If you have the 64-bit version there is one small change in how the VPN works, this is the same as if you are using Visa 64-bit too:
Note for Windows 7 64bit & Vista 64bit: When using one of these operating systems you will find the auto installation of OpenVPN drivers does not work. Don’t worry as there is a very simple solution, I myself use Vista 64 so I know this solution works.
OpenVPN workaround for 64-bit Windows Vista and Windows 7
- Download full/standard OpenVPN installer from http://openvpn.net/release/openvpn-2.1_rc19-install.exe
- You can keep the install settings at default or choose to install the OpenVPN driver only. To make it simple, just leave everything in the installation as it is preselected.
This will install the OpenVPN driver properly even on 64-bit OS. Now when you start OpenVPN Portable through the Identity Cloaker client application, you will no longer be prompted if you want to install the driver as it is installed already.
When you close OpenVPN Portable, you will be prompted if you want to have the driver uninstalled, just choose "No" (if you pick "Yes" by mistake it will not cause any problems).
